The Problem

In Northern Vancouver Island, The Kwakwaka’wakw Revitalization Project (KRP) has been running for multiple years, and is focused on improving access to the land for youth, community members and elders, with a focus on cultural resurgence. The main land back project is Hiladi, a traditional village site that is being reoccupied. More infrastructure is needed to support this project and those who live and visit. YCCBC is an organization that has been working to support this community for years through youth-led projects, but impact was limited due to lack of funding.

The Solution

N:OW for Net-Zero partnered with YCCBC to support this youth-led initiative. The project involved recruiting and compensating local youth to implement multiple projects related to waste management, ecosystem restoration, cultural revitalization, and energy efficiency. Food security challenges were addressed by planting a robust vegetable garden. Youth also improved infrastructure at Grassy Point Campground by clearing trash and invasive species and replacing old outhouses. They then built an Awak’was, designed to give Kwakwaka’wakw people access to their territories during extreme heat. Awak’was means a “place to sit and talk” and is of cultural importance for Kwakwaka’wakw people. In Hiladi they installed a cistern, water system and wind generator.
