École Abbey-Landry

Students at École Abbey-Landry in New Brunswick are installing a cold room to store their crops from their greenhouses to improve sustainable access to local food year round.

The Problem

Students at École Abbey-Landry in New Brunswick are installing a cold room to store their crops from their greenhouses to improve sustainable access to local food year round.

The Solution

École Abbey-Landry is a small school in rural New Brunswick where it’s hard to access fresh fruits and vegetables through the winter. For the past ten years, the school has been trying to grow their on-site gardening system to try to provide students with more fresh produce. However, it gets too cold for their greenhouses to work in the winter and the school didn’t have space to store the larger harvests from the warmer months.
250
students helped work on the project at least once a week through a scheduled class rotation.
Abbey-Landry
believes no one is too young to help with growing, harvesting, or preparing food.

Lessons Learned

One step at a time! Abbey-Landry is working towards a fully sustainable and local food future, but they started with just one small garden. Now they have covered their property in growing equipment, from worm composters to a cold room. You can see the map of all the things they’ve built here!

“As an educator passionate about project-based learning and climate education, the N:OW for Net-Zero program has been transformative for both my students and me. It has provided practical tools and innovative approaches to make sustainability tangible and actionable in the classroom. Through hands-on projects, my students have developed 21st-century skills while addressing real-world environmental challenges, fostering a deep understanding of their role in achieving a net-zero future. This program is not just about education—it’s about empowerment and change.”
François LeBlanc, Program Lead
“With all the tips and tricks that I learned this year, for the rest of my life I can do that to plant my own garden”
