The Problem

École Abbey-Landry is a small school in rural New Brunswick where it’s hard to access fresh fruits and vegetables through the winter. For the past ten years, the school has been trying to grow their on-site gardening system to try to provide students with more fresh produce. However, it gets too cold for their greenhouses to work in the winter and the school didn’t have space to store the larger harvests from the warmer months.

The Solution

Their N:OW for Net-Zero project was installing a cold room so that the crops they grow in their greenhouses can be properly stored and used throughout the winter. They plan to reduce emissions and strengthen their community by having their school be a hub for local food systems.

250
students helped work on the project at least once a week through a scheduled class rotation.

Lessons Learned

One step at a time! Abbey-Landry is working towards a fully sustainable and local food future, but they started with just one small garden. Now they have covered their property in growing equipment, from worm composters to a cold room. You can see the map of all the things they’ve built here!

“Through hands-on projects, my students have developed 21st-century skills while addressing real-world environmental challenges, fostering a deep understanding of their role in achieving a net-zero future. This program is not just about education—it’s about empowerment and change.”
François LeBlanc, Program Lead
“With all the tips and tricks that I learned this year, for the rest of my life I can do that to plant my own garden”
