Fishing boat in open water

Description

In this hands-on lesson, students become the "pit crew" for fishing vessels, investigating how boats can dramatically reduce fuel use and emissions without sacrificing safety or catch. Through a collaborative design challenge, students research and estimate real fuel savings using Project Drawdown data, apply environmental science concepts (drag, efficiency, combustion), and grapple with real-world trade-offs: cost vs. environmental benefit, crew safety vs. emissions reduction, economic viability for small operators vs. industry standards.

Lesson Type: Project, Experiential

Duration: Single Class

Sector: Food, Agriculture & Land Use, Transportation
