Two Hills School

Grade 8 students at Two Hills School in Alberta are tackling emissions and budget efficiency issues by retrofitting the lighting fixtures of 8 classrooms.

The Problem

Before the last couple years, not much environmental action was happening at Two Hills School. In fact, it was rare if climate change was even talked about. So when one environmentally-minded teacher and his math class began brainstorming all the different kinds of change they could do at the school, it quickly became an ambitious three-pronged plan to support climate action and shift how their school talked about the environment!

The Solution

N:OW for Net-Zero is proud to have supported phase one of this plan which was focused on retrofitting the lighting fixtures of 8 classrooms! This not only reduced the school’s emissions substantially, but also contributed to cost savings. The student team researched the most efficient replacements and tracked energy usage and spending after the installation was completed, with the goal of using their project as a pilot to pitch their school board to fund the retrofitting of their entire school and other schools in the area.

Lessons Learned

Safety first! Every school board has different rules about how much students can be involved in repairing or constructing parts of their school buildings. While students at Two Hills originally were hoping to do some of the retrofit themselves, they learned the insurance didn’t cover them and so the maintenance team had to do the actual installation. However students were able to watch them do it and learn from the team about the process and how they could do a retrofit in their own home! So before you start replacing light bulbs or knocking down walls, check with your administration to see how much students are allowed to do themselves or if the learning has to be more of a demonstration.
