The Problem

Three Oaks Senior High is a school that’s very connected to their community. They frequently host big events, like school presentations, sports games, and races. In recent years they finally were able to build out some of their outdoor facilities, putting in a new sports field. However, the new field was far away from the kitchen where they used to prepare food that they’d sell during events to support their school.

The Solution

Students from the TOSH Cares Club decided to work with the shop program to solve this problem by repurposing the school’s unused shed. Students across classes repaired and retrofitted the building to be energy efficient and have a built-in solar system, to turn it into a net-zero multipurpose outbuilding that can be used for classes, clubs, and events at their school. The club has been championing climate action at their school for several years, but were excited to have taken on a large-scale, tangible project that will play such a big part in their school’s ecosystem for years to come.

Lessons Learned

Make worlds collide! Many of the students in the TOSH Cares club had never taken shop classes before, while most of the shop students had never done environmental education. By working together on the shed and its solar hookup, both groups of students got to build new important skills and said they thought about the trades and climate change differently after doing the project! By bringing in as many different classes as possible, projects can have a huge impact.

“We are hoping it will spark people to get outside, start asking questions about sustainability and the environment. If we can get people outside and enjoying the environment then they are going to care probably more for it.”
Ms. Sullivan, Teacher Lead
“It kinda feels like we almost cant make as much of an impact because we are not old enough to start big programs or get a group together but I mean, I think this is an example that we can.”
