Soaring Prairies

Increasing food sovereignty for the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation.
Solutions Star

The Problem

Like many Canada communities, the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation has a lack of access to affordable and healthy produce. Many traditional food and agriculture methods for this community are slowly being lost, as is their abilities to be as self-sufficient as they once were. Food sovereignty among Indigenous people was a way of life for generations, and there was a need to come together, share knowledge and build back these systems as a connected community.

The Solution

This community is working to increase food sovereignty and sustainability by building a greenhouse. Team members completed research to determine a greenhouse structure that would ensure year-round usability while incorporating sustainable energy solutions. The best option was a greenhouse dome that was ideal for maximizing natural light and air circulation and had options for solar upgrades. This is a multi-phase project, starting with a greenhouse and moving towards building an underground food storage space, installing a solar panel array to supply renewable energy to the greenhouse, and hosting a series of workshops to increase education around food systems in the community, especially among youth. The youth project team hopes to tie these learnings to sustainable food infrastructure that can continue to grow over the years and become an important part of building food sovereignty in the community.

community members were engaged through communications and outreach efforts like canning and gardening workshops and community consultations on preferred features and plant selection for the greenhouse.
Lessons Learned
“The end goal is increasing our knowledge and practice of food sovereignty so we can improve the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health of our community members. Many members only get $300 a month to survive off of and I’m finding a lot of homes are not in great shape with the housing department working with a poor budget to begin with, so it's hard to meet those needs let alone basic needs such as food for members.”
