Project Rock

Energy efficiency retrofits for Elder homes in the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation community.
Solutions Star

The Problem

Many homes in the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation community are not energy efficient which is both a climate and socio-economic challenge. It’s extremely difficult to find the funding and time to invest in long-term-savings energy retrofits when community members are on the forefront of Canada’s affordability crisis and are struggling with meeting immediate family needs like food.

The Solution

A youth leader in the community is working to improve energy efficiency in homes with an intergenerational approach. They are bringing in Indigenous energy experts to train local youth in energy efficient housing strategies and energy audit assessments. Through the workshop series, the team will complete energy audits of elders’ homes throughout the community. The youth project team hopes to address energy inefficiency and increase knowledge and implementation of sustainable building practices, with the goal of creating a 5-10 year plan to gradually retrofit the majority of homes in the community.

Elders’ homes in the community were provided energy efficiency workshops. They are currently working with SK Power on doing energy audits for 400 homes across the reserve.
300+
community members were engaged throughout the process. They had 12 youth participate in the first round of workshops.
Lessons Learned
“The workshop proved to be a valuable educational experience, fostering awareness of energy efficiency's importance while also highlighting the challenges many face within Indigenous communities related to housing. Participants left with a better understanding of budgeting, insulation options, and energy assessments, equipping them with skills applicable to real-world situations.”
