Indigenous Voices for Energy Literacy

Working on increasing energy literacy through an Indigenous lens, while highlighting clean energy solutions being implemented in Indigenous communities.

The Problem

After research into curriculums on renewable energy and Indigenous Peoples for high school students across Canada, the youth leads behind IVEL noticed that there was little mandated energy literacy and no representation from Indigenous Peoples on this topic. Their goal is to reduce barriers to energy literacy and fill the gap of knowledge sharing from Indigenous voices. The IVEL team hopes to empower both Indigenous and non–Indigenous learners to become informed and active participants in the energy sector and spark interest in a just transition to a low-carbon economy.

The Solution

IVEL is developing educational videos with Indigenous clean energy champions who will speak to the just transition in their community and walk viewers through an activity from an existing energy toolkit. The IVEL resources are designed to be culturally relevant, respectful, and inclusive of Indigenous perspectives and knowledge. The IVEL resources cover topics such as energy sources, energy efficiency, energy conservation, renewable energy, and climate change. It aims to promote Indigenous voices and knowledge in mainstream energy literacy by highlighting Indigenous energy champions as role models.
