Harbour View High School

Students in the climate action club at Harbour View High School in New Brunswick are installing solar panels on their school’s roof to provide renewable energy and power savings.

The Problem

Students at Harbour View High School in New Brunswick have been doing environmental advocacy for many years. Their climate action club has built hydroponics systems and gardens, hosted workshops, and even written books! However, students were worried about the bigger picture climate impact of their school building, which is over a hundred years old and was not built with sustainability in mind.

The Solution

The climate club decided to dream big with their next project and install solar panels on their school’s roof so they could track the emissions reduction and cost-savings from the implementation. While it’s a big school, they hope an initial installation can be a tangible project that can serve as an education tool for students and teachers in their school on climate solutions and the potential for local impact.

students and teachers form the school’s eco club which worked directly on this project.
900
students and 70 teachers were engaged through educational assemblies and announcements and engaged an additional 300 community members at a year end climate event!

Lessons Learned

Big projects require good teams! The hunt for a solar installer contractor took the team a bit longer than expected, since school solar projects have very unique needs. So make sure you feel good about your contractor and that they’re able to support your project’s needs.

“When students have the opportunity to engage in a project based project such as what we are doing here it instills a lifelong passion for sustainability and climate action.”
Ms. Duran
“I hope this project helps people understand the importance of renewable energy, but I also hope it sparks a domino effect for other people to stand up and act on what they believe in.”
